Cold Symptoms Q&A

How can I tell the difference between cold symptoms and flu symptoms?

Cold and flu symptoms are similar, but there are telltale signs to watch out for. For example, the flu virus often triggers a fever and chills. The common cold typically doesn’t cause a fever. Flu symptoms are usually more severe, lasting a week or two. Alternatively, cold symptoms are typically mild and improve within a few days.

What are some of the most common cold symptoms?

Symptoms of the common cold include:

  • Sneezing
  • Runny nose
  • Stuffy nose
  • Cough
  • Hoarseness
  • Headache
  • Runny eyes and nose
  • Fatigue

Most people feel better within 10 days, but in some cases, the cold causes a persistent cough that lasts for a month or more.

When should I see a doctor about cold symptoms?

The common cold usually improves with rest and at-home treatments, like rest, drinking plenty of fluids, and taking over-the-counter decongestants.

However, make an appointment at FirstPointMD if your symptoms last for more than three days. That’s particularly true if your symptoms occur alongside body aches or a fever above 101.3° degrees.

Don’t worry if you’re too sick to visit the office. Dr. Patel regularly diagnoses the common cold with telemedicine.

How is the common cold diagnosed?

Dr. Patel asks about your symptoms, including when they started and if they’ve worsened over the last few days. He examines your ears, nose, and throat, checking for swelling, irritation, and excess mucus. Dr. Patel listens to your breathing with a stethoscope and checks your lymph nodes for swelling. He also collects a throat culture and sends it to a lab for analysis.

How are cold symptoms treated?

Dr. Patel treats cold symptoms using a conservative and integrative approach. He might suggest:

  • Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication
  • Over-the-counter decongestants
  • Antihistamines to stop a runny nose
  • Cough suppressants
  • Expectorants to thin or loosen mucus

The cold is contagious, so it’s important to stay home until you’re feeling better. Avoid large crowds and wear an N-95 mask if you have to go out. If you live with a roommate or family members, cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze and wash your hands regularly to prevent the spread of germs.
